Kids for Kids Update – 2011 VBS Project

In the summer of 2011, Friends United Meeting asked for $10,000 to buy goats for students at Friends Theological College in Kaimosi, Kenya. Amboy Friends Church joined the outreach by making Kids for Kids the Vacation Bible School project for that year.

FUM recently reported that more than $20,000 was raised to buy goats so the students at FTC could sell the milk to help pay for their tuition. Here’s a more complete update from FUM:

“God works in mysterious ways. After we began raising funds for this project, we met Alice. When Alice’s mother died of AIDS soon after giving birth to Alice in late spring, the tiny infant needed the extraordinary parenting skills of Uncle Philip and Aunt Gentren and the goat’s milk your gifts and faithful encouragement provided. Goats milk is rich in vitamins that are especially important for children and people with HIV/AIDS.

“With these donations, a pen was built to house the goats— Juliette and Mwikali, two nationally-registered females, and a male who’s on his way. The goat house is built up off the ground to keep the goats warm. Goats can take cold through their feet and get pneumonia.

“While the climate in Kaimosi forces goat houses to be built off the ground, it is the perfect climate for growing the food that goats like to eat. So while other goat farmers with smaller plots of land are struggling to provide good food for their goats, these Kaimosi goats will be well fed and, therefore, produce more milk.

“Currently Cedric Nandoya, the dairyman for FTC, is working with the goats until the students return from winter break. There are already several eager customers for this rich, medicinal milk.”
