Amboy Friends Monthly Meeting met April 21, 2013, after a Mexican Fiesta carry in. We had 23 members present.
Clerk Michael Reynolds read a devotion from Steven Pope entitled “Living with a Soft Heart” and opened the meeting with prayer.
The March minutes were read and approved with a correction that Edna Daily was actually the eldest member of Amboy Friends. She lived to be 104 and four months and nine days while Lela Kelsey was 104 and seven days.
The treasurer’s report was presented and approved. Our budget balance looked better this month with our budgeted expenditures at $26,100 and our total offering income at $26,745.
Pastor Dwight Elliott presented his report, highlighting Tri-County Quarterly Meeting at Westfield Friends. He encouraged our meeting to be more involved with quarterly meeting as it is exciting to see the growth occurring within it.
Youth Pastor Brock Sizelove reported on youth activities which included SkyZone with other youth groups within quarterly meeting and spending additional time with kids during their spring breaks. He will be very involved with the youth camps at Quaker Haven this summer. Our church will still pay one half of the camp early-bird registration fee of $280, which is due May 15. The $50 late fee will be not be split. He also noted that a former youth group member, Lauren Reynolds, has been hired as an intern for Indiana Yearly Meeting.
The Missions Committee treasurer’s report was presented and approved.
Old Business
Ministry & Oversight nominated John Norris and Lori Elliott to Personnel Committee. These appointments were approved.
Personnel Committee has completed its assignments, which will be presented at the May meeting.
The Quaker Haven M&O retreat was attended by John Norris, Alan Hunt, and Michael and Amy Reynolds. It was a well spent weekend, sharing with other meetings in both Indiana and Western Yearly Meetings.
New Business
M&O presented the transfer of membership of Dwight and Lori Elliott from New Castle Friends to Amboy Friends. This was approved.
Clerk Reynolds noted that our record keeping system is outdated and members are needed who are willing to sort through and update our records. This area has been neglected since the passing of Glennis Douglas a few years ago. Members will be appointed to this task by the May meeting.
Clerk Reynolds is also hoping to update the Committee Procedure Manual to keep in line with what Faith & Practice suggests and what we actually do. The last update was in 1986, and some committees are no longer in existence.
Alan Hunt reported on IYM Representative Council. Since reconfiguration, 45 churches plan to continue with IYM; nine are still undecided; and 13, including two of the largest, have stated plans to discontinue. Even so, the assessments are to stay the same at this time.
John Norris reported on Friends Fellowship in Richmond. It has been in business for 50 years and is managing well. However, the board is supposed to be made up of Yearly Meeting members. The reconfiguration will change the status of some board members. Most likely the bylaws will be adjusted at Yearly Meeting sessions this summer.
After the flooding this week, the Red Cross contacted Pastor Dwight about using Amboy Friends in times of crisis for those in need. They will assess our facilities to see what we have to offer, and then we could enter into an annual agreement to partner with them. After a brief discussion, it was felt that the consensus of the meeting was to go ahead with this partnership. This perpetuates our purpose statement of serving our community.
The Trustees reported that the vacant house across the street by the parking lot will be donated to the church and the Trustees will demolish it to help clean up the area.
Carpets are to be cleaned Tuesday morning due to the flooding this past week. A huge thank you to those who helped with immediate clean up on Friday.
The next meeting will be May 19, 2013. The meeting closed with prayer.
