Robert Varela first came to Belize Friends School during the 2010-11 academic year. Robert frequently said, “I am as dumb as a rock.” He was barely able to read and had low self-esteem. We knew it was important to help him feel successful, so we entered him into our two-year program and started him at the lowest level for math and reading.
As he began to learn the basic skills and progress in his studies, he began to feel success and a boost in his morale. Throughout his first year, we progressively increased the difficulty of the work. By the time the 2011-12 academic year began, Robert was ready to participate on an equal level with our one-year students.
He stopped saying he was “as dumb as a rock” and now believes in himself. He has done well this year, showing consistent progress and good work. His mother is so appreciative for all we have done for Robert. This could not have happened without Belize Friends School.
Prayer Requests
- Pray that God will continue to guide and direct the expansion and continuation of the Belize ministry.
- Pray that the students will be motivated to learn and determined to work to improve their situations, often despite the lack of family support.
- Pray for the socio-economic issues that Belizeans face.
- Pray for health, strength, and wisdom for teacherCandi Young and her family.
- Pray that God will raise up partners to support the ministry of Friends in Belize.
- Pray that domestic and gang violence will subside and for the students who have experienced the violence.
- Pray for health, strength, and wisdom for administrators Sam and Becky Barber and their family.
