Are You Asleep at the Wheel?

Luke 22:46 (NASB95) states, “…Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that you may not enter into temptation.”

When are we as Christians most likely to find ourselves sleeping at the wheel?

As many of you know, Lori and I had the opportunity to go on a weekend getaway. It was a pleasant trip, and our children were with grandparents enjoying their time as well. But the return required Lori and I to fly from San Diego to Atlanta then to Indianapolis beginning at 11 p.m. and not stopping until 9 a.m. Once we were in Indianapolis, we drove back to Amboy after being up all night. We both were terribly tired and quick to want to fall asleep at the wheel. But we split the driving between the two of us, and the Lord ensured our safety getting back.

Jesus understood what it was like for people who fall asleep in our faith. It usually happens at the most opportune times. Not when we are in need of Him and are faithfully on our knees asking for the Lord to come into our lives, but when things go well and seem to be pretty wrinkle-free. We become complacent and our eyes close and danger arises in such a way that we might not even be aware of it until it’s too late.

It is important for us to remain watchful and thankful, as it safeguards us against such things, and to always find ourselves in prayer, as it keeps us on the road of devotion.

As written by one famous theologian, C. H. Spurgeon, “There is no temptation half so dangerous as not being tempted.”
