Amboy Friends Monthly Meeting met August 19, 2012, after a carry-in meal. There were 25 members present.
Clerk Michael Reynolds opened with an excerpt from a speech given in 1967 by Friend Douglas Steere entitled “Being Present Where You Are.”
The July minutes were read and approved.
Both the July and August treasurer’s reports were presented and approved, making note that the budgeted operating amount through seven months is $65,275 but the income is just $60,106. We need to make up this shortfall as the heating season is fast approaching.
Pastor Dwight Elliott presented his pastor’s report with a recap of July happenings including Quaker Haven camps, Yearly Meeting, VBS, and the Haiti mission trip. Upcoming events include the Amboy Community Service and carry in on September 16, our own Back 2 Church Sunday on September 23, and a new 101 Class starting in September with Michael Reynolds teaching.
While the Hunger Care Ministry will take a break after the August meal for evaluation, recognition was given to Roger Vincent, Stephanie Fruth, Rob and Sue Dulmes, and the score of volunteers who served our community. Ministry & Oversight is updating the prayer chain. Sign up at the table in the library to be included. Lastly, it was decided that the offering on Sunday, September 30, will be for Discretionary Care.
The Missions Committee treasurer’s report was presented and approved.
Old Business
The Trustees and the general fund will split the $1,000 deductible that will be applied to the approximately $2,500 insurance claim for items damaged by lightning.
A copy of the letter that Clerk Reynolds drafted and sent to Indiana Yearly Meeting concerning the reconfigurations was handed out to those present.
Alan Hunt reported on the Yearly Meeting sessions, saying there weren’t necessarily any open reconfiguration meetings but some independent A, B, and now C groups met. Superintendent Doug Shoemaker has made a timeline for the reconfiguration process. The Yearly Meeting budget did not change from last year since the direction of the Meeting has yet to be determined. Also, the superintendent’s contract was extended one year as opposed to three for the same reason. There was a healthy attendance from the Hispanic Friends meetings as well.
New Business
John Norris noted that FUM’s 40 Days of Prayer is coming in October. It would be nice to see our church involved.
Scott Dubois of the Auditing Committee will be auditing various committees during September.
Since the exterior work on the church has not been completed, landscaping is on hold. However, Shari Auginbaugh will mulch the front areas and add some potted flowers for the fall season.
Our next meeting will be moved to September 23 due to the Community Service on the third Sunday.
The meeting closed with prayer.
